RHODOPI WITHOUT CYANIDE

The East Rhodopi mountains is a region in Bulgaria, unique with its landscapes, Mediterranean climate, abundant historical monuments and exceptional biological diversity. This place is now threatened by the plans of the Canadian Dundee Precious Metals to develop an open-pit gold mine and use cyanide in the extraction of the precious metal. The planned mine is to be located only 800 meters from the hospital of the nearby town, Krumovgrad, and the tailings pond for the waste cyanide pulp is designed be be right above the water source zone of the town.

BURNING WASTE - THE HAZARDS FOR HUMAN HEALTH

The Ministry of Environment and Waters wants to construct an incineration factory and landfill for Hazardous Waste in the already highly polluted region of Radnevo where operates 3 Thermal Power Plants, 3 opencasts and there are five villages. The local affected people do not want this project to be implemented in their region.
The main problems is that the incineration technology is well recognised as the world's biggest resource of dioxins and furans which are highly dangerous pollutants and cause cancer, heart and lung diseases, gene modifications and many others.

STOP THE INVASION OF THE GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS IN BULGARIA!

According to many scientists and representatives of environmental organisation, united under the coalition "Bulgaria - GMOfree zone", the draft law, which allows and regulates the release of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in the environment of Bulgaria, as well as food containing GMO on the market, is developed under the influence of multinational corporation, aiming at using Bulgaria as a testing place for GMO and "Troian horse" for the supply of GM food and crops in Europe.

SAVE THE MOST PRESERVED REGION OF SOFIA FROM ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER!

The Road Executive Agency plans to build the "Ljulin" motorway through the densely populated south-west region of the field of Sofia. "Ljulin" is a high-speed transit motorway, part of the Trans European Corridor N4. The motorway will be 6 carriageways where the total weight of the route-bed will be around 100 meters.

SAVE THE KRESNA GORGE

Part of the magnificent Bulgarian nature threatens to be destroyed if the Struma Motorway (between Sofia and Kulata) passes through the Kresna Gorge.
The Bulgarian government plans to build the Struma Motorway (which is a part of the Trans European Corridor N 4 Sofia - Athens) directly THROUGH the Kresna Gorge and the town of Kresna.

SOFIA AIRPORT: NOT ABOVE OUR HEADS!

Sofia Airport is situated within the city of Sofia, very close to human settlements. Thus, it poses serious problems on environment and especially on human health. Bulgarian environmental non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have argued against the project for "Reconstruction, development and extension of Sofia Airport", and their concerns about its inappropriate location have a long history.

THE STABILITY PACT WATCH

The Stability Pact Watch (SPW) is a coalition of environmental non-governmental organisations across the Balkan countries - Za Zemiata (Bulgaria), TERRA Milleniul III (Romania), Eco-sense (Macedonia), Young Researchers from Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Center for Ecology and Sustainable Development (Serbia and Montenegro). It is initiated within the CEE Bankwatch Network.
